Family of four

The past few weeks have been a crazy stir of emotions as we adjust to being a family of four.

I have lots to say, and I promised I would be a better blogger once I had all this free time on maternity leave. But I simultaneously have a bazillion free hours and absolutely no time to do anything.

It's weird.

Speaking of weird, check out Amelia's awesome outfit. Hoodie (I made it!), diaper and Mary Janes. Awesome.

She is quite the silly girl these days.
Most days we start off just hanging out in bed. For soooooo long. It's wonderful. Until I start to feel mommy guilt for laying in bed while my toddler watched the 10th episode of Curious George on my iPad. Oops. But the cuddles are soooo good. And my bed is comfy too.

We are getting some sleep around here. Kinda. I'm ok with waking up to nurse Henry a few times until about 5am, and then I just get cranky and want to sleep and I start to get all dilerious and can't remember if I fed him, what time I fed him, where is he!?, or who I am...ya know, dilerious. It's great fun.

The hardest part of all this... is the mommy guilt for not going out and being active enough with Amelia. I try not to sit around and just hold Henry all day, but it's freaking hard to do much around here. There has been literally like two days in February where it didn't rain (really, I'm not lying) and we took full advantage! We soaked up that sun, even though it was barely 50 degrees and still freezing. We went to the park one day and Amelia dominated the slides. Another day I went for a long walk with a friend and her kiddos.

All in all, we are settling in well. It helps that Dan is the most amazing husband ever. He cleans the house, does fun projects with Amelia, makes me meals, etc. I am too blessed. And he does this all while juggling graduate school and the ubiquitous world of fine art. Someone needs to just smack me next time I give him crap about whatever the heck I give him crap about. He seriously is the best man on the planet.

I also think Amelia is adjusting well to Henry. She seems to truly love him and gives him kisses ALL DAY LONG. Sometimes we have to tell her to stop giving him kisses. And she says his name in the cutest sweetest way. Whenever we come into a room she asks where he is, she likes to forcefully give him his pacifier, rock him in his bouncer, asks me to lay him down or pick him up, notices when he cries and will give him random toys. Is this going to last, because it's precious? She's also become very fond of milk these days...it's pretty funny. She has to have her own milk whenever he's eating. Haha!
So I leave with this....
On some days...

....not even chocolate pudding can make things better....

But!

Most of our days are truly like this:

Blissful.

Peaceful.

And sweet.

We love this little guy so much!

Little Henry's birth was amazing! The exact opposite of Amelia's birth. Not that hers wasn't amazing-- it was!, but just completely different. Amelia took around 27 hours to arrive and Henry it was about 8...such a difference!
The wonderful thing about his birth was that I was able to spend most of it at home. I walked around for at least 2 weeks already 3 cm dilated, so I knew that this birth experience would be a little different. Henry was born at 38weeks and 3 days so I was also getting very anxious to meet him, as Amelia was born at 37weeks and 1 day. It's weird to think that it isn't even my due date yet...but I don't mind my babies arriving early, as long as they are healthy!
The night before his birth we had Chinese food with Dans parents and due to my gestational diabetes I spent a good hour afterwards walking up the stairs and doing lunges and squats while folding laundry to try and keep my blood sugar low. But as I went to bed, I felt no impending labor.
However, I did wake up a few times feeling a little crampy, but it didn't feel abnormal until about 3:30am. So maybe Henry's labor was a little longer, but I didn't really feel it! At 3:30, I had some pretty strong contractions and a bit of bloody show, so I started to get excited. But I knew that this could only be a sign of labor coming in the next few days. I tried to sleep, but I was mostly too excited. By 5am, I noticed my contractions were strong and about 10mins apart, so I decided to take a shower. I must have taken a really hot shower, because I ended up scaring Dan as I woke him up telling him I felt dizzy. I had meant to let him sleep a little longer, oops! I tried to rest a bit more, but by 6:30, I was getting anxious and a bit more uncomfortable so I went downstairs to eat some breakfast. I think it was at this point that I realized that things were finally happening.
I actually really enjoyed having a few quiet moments downstairs, eating oatmeal and an apple, timing my contractions, teaching myself to breathe through the hardest parts and emailing my school/sub. I had already planned to be gone from school that morning due to a doc appointment, so it was very convenient that Henry decided to show up when he did!
By 7:30/8, I had cancelled my doc appointment, called L&D to let them know what was going on and texted Marianne and Scott to come over and watch Amelia. My contractions were about 6-7minutes apart. At this point, Dan and Amelia were awake. It was interesting trying to concentrate through contractions with Amelia...she just laughed and smiled at me. I was also getting quite concerned because I had pretty bad back labor (again!), so I was trying all sorts of swaying to try and get him to move. Every now and then Dan had to apply some counter pressure to my low back. I remember that my contractions hurt, in fact they hurt just as bad as my first labor with Amelia when I gave in to the epidural, but this time was completely different because I wasn't exhausted and 24hrs into it. Surprisingly, it gave me reassurance knowing that the pain would only last for a minute and that I was getting closer to meeting the little dude. I'm pretty proud of how I handled the pain at home, especially for how dilated I ended up being before I made it to the hospital (spoiler: 9cm and feeling ready to push!)

Anyways... (man....birth stories are so long.....I just want to be able to remember everything.....) by the time Marianne and Scott arrived, 8:30?, I was definitely feeling more uncomfortable and needed a quiet place to concentrate, so I went upstairs to sway. Dan was with me to comfort me and apply counter pressure to my back, but he was also trying to get everything ready to leave and make sure his school business was in order. I didn't really mind because I enjoyed being alone to concentrate. Although, at this point I was also starting to get nervous about how close my contractions were getting. I was getting closer and closer to the 4-5mins apart that necessitated going to L&D. After laying down for awhile (which ironically, I think allowed Henry to flip around a bit), I started to feel a little flushed and just not well, so I finally told Dan it was time to go!

I think we headed out the door at 10am. I just remember trying to say bye to Amelia but having a contraction and walking into the bathroom to lean on the wall. I was definitely starting to not feel well at this point. Getting in the car and having contractions while sitting was absolutely terrible. I must have had 3-4 back to back contractions. Ugh! Dan drove fast, but well. I just remember thinking, I better be ready to deliver this kid when we get there, because if I have 10 more hours of this pain or it gets worse....I'm done. Dan quickly dropped me off and I waited for him to park. It was here that I suddenly realized that I was probably in transition... I felt faint, weak and was starting to shake a bit. And oh.....why does Kaiser have such a long hallway?!? It's terrible. I had to stop like 3 times, all the while Dan kept offering to get a wheelchair but I didn't want to wait or for him to leave me, I just needed to get there! By the time we made it down the hall and he phoned for them to open the doors, I had to squat down or I wasn't going to make it. I also very surprisingly felt the need to push! This was a scary but awesome feeling because I knew I was almost done! Hahahaha! Little did I know that the worst pain was ahead of me....

The nurse that opened the door looked at me skeptically, like every women that arrives claims to be ready to push, but agreed to let me use a wheelchair to go into triage. Everyone did work quickly though and we found out I was 9cm and my water was about to burst, so I was swiftly moved into a room. Yay! I was so happy that I was this far along, but I totally couldn't express it, as at this point I had to just close my eyes and block everything out. I got asked a billion questions, and I dont think I answered that many of them. The midwife did ask if she should break my water and I agreed as it would speed things up...yes, please! Although I wasn't quite 10cm, I felt a huge urge to push, so the midwife said I could, that I should do whatever felt best or most comfortable. So I started to push and it just felt awkward at first. Eventually, they got out the squat bar and I had more success with that....which was great, but oh so bad it hurt! They thankfully gave up on trying to keep the monitors on, but honestly, I hardly noticed as I was trying so hard to concentrate. It took my whole body strength to effectively push. While I was happy that I was did this drug free, I was simultaneously cursing myself for not getting an epidural. This was easily the hardest thing I have ever done, physically, mentally, emotionally, it was hard! I also vividly remember thinking, I will NEVER do this again...HAHA! But despite all this talk of pain, I already have forgotten some of it (some...).

After just about 45 minutes, the little dude finally made it out! He was placed on my tummy, well more like my hips, as he ended up having a super short umbilical cord. I just remember the midwife saying, oh! shortie cord, he's got a shortie cord!

Right away Dan and I realized how perfectly beautiful he was. I felt so much relief that he was here and healthy. I'm not a crier during birth, but I nearly cried, I was so happy. He had the perfect little face and he happily got to cuddle and nurse with me for the next two hours. I'm really thankful that Kaiser allows those first few hours for us. There is nothing like looking down at a brand new babe resting on your chest.

My midwife and nurses were calm, encouraging and wonderful. I felt totally safe. They were great at communicating with us and my midwife even said that this would have been a fantastic home birth. She included Dan in letting him know about what we should expect for my recovery and I knew he appreciated bring included. Sometimes I feel like the dad gets forgotten, so that was nice.

Man....I feel so blessed to have this sweet boy as part of our family.

And that Amelia loves him too!

She really does. She says "baby!" every time she sees him, gives him kisses and then points out all of his features. It's precious.

We are all smiles over here, ridiculously grinning at our beautiful little family.

Obsessed

I've been a little obsessed with this fabric combo lately. Denim chambray (Joann's) and red polka dots. (Dottie by Moda).
Last week I made another Noodlehead fabric basket for my sister in law and new nephew (who arrived on earth today!!).
I loved how it turned out. They are so fun to make. And this one didn't take too long to make either. Maybe 3-4ish hours over the course of the week? Mostly cutting and ironing, it seems.
The combo turned out so great I even decided to use it again this weekend for a little 1st birthday dress for our friends daughter.
It's based off of the Made by Rae geranium pattern. I just used the newborn pattern and self-drafted a 12 month sized based off of one of Mia's dresses. Once 20-month Mia outgrows her bazillion 12-18month old dresses, I'll probably buy the geranium pattern since I'd like to have the different sizes and sleeve options. How do you do a sleeve in a lined bodice?!? Agh?! Although it is fun making my own patterns--for free!
Anyways...I screwed up the button in the back pretty bad on this one. So someone else needs to have a baby girl so I can redeem myself a bit. Or Mia can just finally move on to a 2T already. She has zero dresses in 2T...hmmmm. Just realized that.
So moving on....I ended up jealous that I gifted away all the cute chambray and polka dots. So sometime during my 3am pregnancy insomnia this week, I decided I needed to make a little zipper pouch using the same fabrics. Thank gosh for Pinterest! I'm not sure what else I would do between the hours of 2am and 4am (oh and PS, 4am is a terrible time to finally fall back asleep when you wake up around 5:20am. Makes for a terribly groggy morning). Anyways...sorry to all my Pinterest friends for the millions of sewing related pins! Oops!
So here's that little zippered bag. I need to buy more cute zippers and make more.
I should probably take the time to take better pictures of the things I make. And trim all my stray threads, too.
Oh well.
I used a few different tutorials to briefly figure out the zipper. It's easy. Every sewing blogger on the planet seems to have a zippered pouch tutorial. So thank you for that!
I quickly put this pouch to good use too, holding little things I might need at the hospital when baby Henry arrives. Nursing pads, Chapstick, hair ties, bobby pins. That sort of stuff.
Now...to make a hospital bag. Guys. I'm getting a little carried away. I've got this duffle that I want to make and a shopping cart full of fabric on fabric.com. Luckily, the little dude will probably arrive before I spend all his budgeted baby fund money on fabric...
Any ideas on how to fund my sewing addiction?!

Little Henry's Nursery Loft

Over Winter Break we finally had time to convert our tiny upstairs loft into a mini nursery for our little guy. Amelia of course uses this space too for diaper changes and playing.
We really like how it turned out.
And for a pretty small nonexistent budget I think I did a good job of keeping to the theme/colors I wanted (mint, neutrals, yellow or a soft orange, natural wood and a contrast with some black). We painted the walls Dolphin Fin (Behr)....it's a little lighter and bluer than I wanted, but it changed the atmosphere of the room enough. And we repainted Amelia's changing table a nice minty green color (Mountain Mist - Behr).
[Etsy Mountain print] [Etsy Giraffe print]
[DIY changing pad cover...w/ a tutorial like this]
[Ikea Crib + Mattress]
Dan and my mom found this antique rocking chair at a local antique shop last year. Dan painted it yellow a while back and it's moved throughout our house. I made new envelope pillowcase covers (like these) to fit into the loft. I LOVE love the Michael Miller Bridgetown fabric. It showcases bridges here in Portland. I bought the fabric when Dan surprised me and took me to Cool Cottons, a really nice fabric store here in Portland for my birthday. It was so fun to pick out fancy fabric and I'm glad I finally found a good use for it! The changing pad cover and the fabric basket below also used fabric I bought then. Can't remember what the orange material is and I'm too lazy to look up the sciencey material....but the neutral linen is a Robert Kaufman Essex yarn dyed linen in flax. If I had an unlimited budget, I would buy yards of this linen in every shade!
Above is one of my favorite things I've EVER made! I bought a noodlehead pattern for this fabric basket and it was sooo fun and easy to make! I love it. For now it holds Henry's hospital clothes and other miscellaneous baby items we might need.
I so love this chemistry material that I used to line the basket!
And I think this will be his going home outfit, if it fits! We found it at Target and it was too cute to resist!
I also somehow managed to make a fitted bassinet liner all on my own! Dan used this bassinet when he was a baby and we are so happy to have it! Amelia used it in our bedroom too and it worked out great!
We really can't wait to meet this little dude!
It's been fun and exhausting celebrating him and giving him a special place in the house. I have a few other things that I made too, like a swaddle pouch, baby pants, and some fitted diapers. Plus, I've still got a couple things I'd like to make before he gets here...like a simple but soft baby blanket, and jazz up some baby things we already have (like burp cloths, etc).

Working our way to the terrible two's!

Look at this face.

Fruit smoothie mustache
And this face.
Not mine.

Living with a 1.5 year old can sometims feel like this....

All spinny and crazy and topsy-turvy.
You know, because every single second I turn around and there is a mess like this:

Or she's scaling the wall or something.

Or throwing my iPhone on the floor and screaming "Moh!" The newest version of "no."

But that's ok...she's still pretty darn cute.

And she's not too terrible all the time. :)

In fact, the two weeks I got to stay home during winter break were totally awesome.

We went to places like Ikea (we had some intense nesting going on over here!) and felt prickly aloe Vera plants...

We also visited our family and friends, played with new Christmas toys, and prepared for Henry's impending arrival.

Despite all the "Moh's!!!!!!!!!!!" we get these days, it's really fun to teach her things and show her new tricks.

At this age she is really into:

  • Puzzles (she can rock a 26 piece ABC puzzle like nobody's business. We are super impressed!)
  • Finding objects/animals in books (this is so fun!)
  • Saying "Moh!"
  • Her baby doll (a Christmas gift)
  • Pretend play (she is just barely starting this!)
  • Saying "Moh!"
  • Snacks (oh she loves to ask for snacks...)
  • Coloring
  • Watching Curious George (she will watch 20mins in the morning in our bed while we try and wake up.)
  • Petting or otherwise driving Lily insane.
  • Saying "Moh!" (Did I mention that???)
We are so lucky to have her in our family!
A couple weeks ago Dan and I were both terribly sick with the stomach flu at the same time. Amelia was such a good, patient girl during the whole ordeal...you know as we tried to take care of her mid-puking and nauseously staggering around the house or completely falling asleep while one of us was "watching" her. It was amazing.

We love her so much.

I can't wait for her to meet her baby brother Henry.

06 December 2013

Brrrrr! It's cold outside!

We decorated our house last weekend. Earliest we've ever gotten our stuff together.

Amelia helped us put lights and ornaments on our little fake 3 ft tree.

She loved it and kept saying "treeeeeee!""

Every day we try and do some little activity to spend time together and enjoy the holiday spirit. I put together a little list of advent type activities. Mostly it includes drinking hot chocolate, listening to Christmas music or coloring. But it's nice to come home and have a list of something entertaining to do to keep us busy in the evenings.

We hope you are enjoying the holiday spirit and staying warm! It's barely been over freezing today! We even got a tiny amount of snow!

Fall

With the days getting shorter we tried to enjoy as much time outside as possible this fall. We played at the park, in the alleyway with neighbors, cleaned up the garden and went for walks.

But now that it's dark before 5pm, it's a little tricky to keep Amelia entertained in the evenings. So I've been trying to keep her occupied with crafts and other silly baby-toddler things. Like collecting leaves and gluing them on paper.

That was entertaining for about 5 minutes. So we quickly moved on to crayons, coloring and making cards.

So far we've tried to do something crafty or at least attempt purposeful play each night.

Now that it's December we are trying to do our own mini advent activities each night. It's a little tricky with a 1.5 yr old, but we'll figure it out.

02 December 2013

18 months

Height 2' 6.6" 13% <----- shortie!!

Weight 22lb 11.5oz 51%

Head 18.11" 44%

Okay, the girl is almost 19 months, but whatever.

As soon as 18 months arrived she's been a full-blown toddler. Terrorizing mom and dad.

Running, jumping, squealing, giggling, dancing, stomping.

Lots of "NO's!!!!"

"Ready. Set. Goooo's!"

She's picky. And bossy. And very determined.

She throws a mean slow-mo tantrum. Slowly lowering herself to the floor, as not to hurt herself.

It's a handful, but also pretty hilarious.

So all that makes her sound real terrible. But she's not. She's still sweet and loves to cuddle and gives us occasional kisses.

For a couple of weeks she was obsessed with books. We could read them for a solid hour, which is real long in toddlerhood. But now she's a little too bossy to let mamma read and turn the pages. So we read for 5 seconds instead. Fun.

Again, we are still convinced that she's brilliant. The words are flowing out of her mouth. Besides being big on "no" she also is getting better at asking for things. She says "more" in the sweetest little high pitched voice, "mo, mo, mo, mo." Also, "up up up up" It's totally precious. It's like she knows if she turns on the sugary sweet voice she'll get what she wants. And she does.

Other little things that nobody else really cares about, except for mamma:

  • She mostly drinks out of a real cup now. This is good and bad.
  • Still loves her blankey (one day she cried while it was in the washer)
  • She's totally figured out "eyes" "ears" "nose" and "mouth" and often points them out on us.
  • Her friend taught her how to do "knuckles" and she picked it up on the first try.
  • Her favorite color is "blue" although she calls every color "blue" but we're working on it.
  • She's starting to finally make animal noises and point out animals in books. It's taken forever for this to stick. I've been working on pointing at a cow for a solid 6 months....but she'll point to a balloon on the first try.
  • She still likes to clean and throw away our trash. It's awesome.
